Espresso Martinis

A coffee cocktail that was originally created in London in 1983, when a model asked a bartender to make her a drink which would “wake her up”. And, the rest is history. The espresso martini is a hugely popular drink in the U.K and around the world.

A lot of coffee and cocktail fans out there will think they have this one covered. But how much does the espresso that you use impact the taste of the caffeinated boozy option? The answer is of course… lots.

Coffees that are roasted for espresso use are roasted hotter and for longer. Only a small amount longer, in order to increase the body and reduce the acidity of the coffee. These qualities allow your espresso martini to be full of flavour but not challenging. Just the trick when you’ve had a meal and need something smooth…

The Ingredients:

  1. Ice
  2. 1 third Vodka
  3. 1 third Kahlua coffee liqueur
  4. 1 third Freshly made espresso
  5. A few coffee beans to garnish

The Method:

  1. Make your espresso using a home espresso machine or with a Moka Pot coffee maker. Leave it to chill for a short time.
  2. Add the vodka, espresso, Kahlua and ice to a shaker or jam jar and shake well.
  3. Strain the drink into a glass, spoon on the foam and garnish the top with a few coffee beans.
