Installation day is exciting — but a little preparation goes a long way. Whether you’re opening a new café or upgrading your existing setup, getting your space ready before the engineer arrives means a smoother install, less disruption, and a faster route to your first pull.

Utilities: Power and Water First

Most commercial espresso machines require a dedicated 13-amp or 32-amp supply, depending on the model — check your machine’s specification sheet in advance. Your water supply needs to be within practical reach of the machine’s location: a standard 15mm or 22mm copper or push-fit connection is typical. A mains pressure of around 2–4 bar is ideal for most machines with a built-in pump. If your premises has a water softener or filtration system already installed, let your engineer know so connections can be planned accordingly. If not, now’s a good time to discuss in-line filtration options — good water quality directly affects machine longevity and espresso quality.

Clear the Area and Plan Your Workflow

Make sure the installation zone is clear before your engineer arrives — no boxes, equipment or clutter on or around the counter. Consider the workflow your team will use day-to-day: the machine, grinder, knock box, and tamping station all need logical positioning for an efficient service. Ensure there’s adequate counter depth (typically at least 60cm) and that overhead clearance allows for the steam wand to be used comfortably.

Drainage Matters

Commercial espresso machines produce wastewater through the drip tray and backflushing. Gravity-fed drainage to a floor drain or under-counter waste is the most common setup. If you’re relying on a drip tray without direct drainage, factor in how frequently it will need emptying during a busy service — drainage by gravity or a drain hose run to a suitable waste point is strongly recommended.

Have a Contact On Site

Ensure someone with full knowledge of the premises — including access to the fuse board, stop cock, and any existing plumbing routes — is on site for the duration of the install. This avoids delays and means any decisions about cable routing or pipework can be made quickly on the day.
