The Sidamo region derives its name from the Sidama ethnic group, who are native to the area. Arsi and Bale regions border Sidamo to the East, while Gamogofa borders it to the West.

Sidamo is situated along the Great Rift Valley, resulting in a verdant and fertile countryside. The presence of numerous freshwater lakes not only supplies water for drinking and agriculture but also contributes to the high population density in the area.
