An Introduction
The Moka Pot, or stovetop, coffee maker comes under the confusing and mysterious banner for a lot of speciality coffee lovers. Moka Pots may appear confusing purely down to the science of it. How does water get from down there, to up there, and arrive as coffee?! Curious coffee drinkers need to worry no longer, we have broken down the “how” in clear terms for you to broaden your speciality coffee brewing skillset. A good Moka Pot doesn’t cost the earth, in more sense than one. Good Moka Pots are a cheap tool if you look in the right places and have zero waste (such as filter papers). This means that, like cafetieres, you can drink your favourite speciality coffees guilt-free. Moka pot use gives the drinker an Italian-inspired, espresso-style cup of java that packs a serious punch. The coffee pour from this method really is one of the best coffees – silky espresso from home!
What you’ll Need
A good moka pot/stovetop coffee maker
Cold/room temperature water
Finely ground speciality coffee (espresso-roasted coffee would be our recommendation with this brew method)
Brew Time
8 min
Step 1
Fill the bottom compartment of your moka pot with water, up to the line that indicates it is full.
The Italian moka pot is comprised of 2 chambers: 1 for your speciality coffee, and 1 for cold water.
Step 2
Add 18-20g of ground coffee to the basket, and distribute the coffee evenly. Place the basket on to the water-holding compartment. Screw the top chamber of your good moka pot on to the lower 2 pieces. The coffee pot should fit together, but sometimes granules prevent it from screwing together smoothly!
The Italian moka pot has a basket for espresso coffee much like the basket used on an espresso machine. More coffee can be added in this stage if you prefer your brew stronger.
Step 3
Place the moka pot on to heat either on a fire or on your stovetop, at a low-medium heat. Wait for approximately 5-10 minutes, and you will notice the top chamber is filling with delicious speciality coffee.
Step 4
When the central spout has stopped dispensing coffee, take the moka pot off the heat.
The Italian moka pot should keep your coffee warm in the top chamber for a while, but enjoy whilst its hot for maximum enjoyment.
Pour the coffee, and…
Enjoy!
