Using A Cafetiere: To properly use a cafetière, start by cleaning it before and after each use to ensure the best coffee flavor. Next, boil the kettle and let it sit for a minute to slightly cool the water. Add 1 tablespoon of coffee per cup to the bottom of the heatproof jug. For an 8-cup cafetière, use 50-60g of coffee. Fill the cafetière halfway with hot water, stir the grounds, and then top it off with the remaining water. Cover with the lid without plunging and set a 4-minute timer. Slowly plunge the coffee, then pour into mugs and savor the brew.
Do I need to preheat a cafetiere to stop it from cracking? You do not need to preheat the cafetière to prevent it from cracking as cafetières are made with toughened glass.
How much coffee goes into the pot? The general rule for servings is one scoop (1 tbsp or 7g) of ground coffee per mug or per 125ml of hot water. Consider weighing it for accurate results and adjust according to your taste preference for coffee strength.
How should the coffee be ground? When buying ground coffee, ensure that it is medium ground for a cafetière to avoid issues with the strainer. If grinding your own coffee, aim for a consistent size, earthy appearance without any shiny outer shells or large pieces. Avoid grinding too finely to prevent dustiness or over-extraction
Do I put boiling water straight in to my French Press/cafetiere? When adding water, ensure it is just off boiling by allowing it to cool for a minute after boiling. Using water straight from boiling can result in a slightly burnt or bitter taste in your coffee.
Should I stir? Before pressing, stir the coffee in the cafetière after filling it halfway with water to fully submerge the grounds. Avoid stirring once the plunger touches the coffee’s surface to prevent spilling boiling water.
How long do I leave it to brew? Brew the coffee for 4 minutes, setting a timer to avoid over-brewing, which can result in a bitter taste. Brewing for less than 4 minutes may not extract all the flavors the coffee has to offer. Dispose of the coffee grounds by adding them to your compost or green bin.
