The Farmer and Region
West of Addis Ababa lies Nekemte, a market town and the base of primary cooperatives supplying the Oromia Coffee Farmers Co-operative Union (OCFCU).
Locally, the coffee is referred to as Lekempti (in Amharic) or Nekemte/Neqemte (in Oromo). Primary cooperatives consist of coffee-growing members who harvest and process their own beans. Secondary cooperatives, composed of primary members, offer services like export, financial aid, and training. OCFCU has been integrating innovative technology to enhance efficiency, transparency, and market accessibility for its 560,000 individual farmer members.
The organization advocates for Fair Trade practices to uphold social and environmental sustainability and foster enduring relationships among producers, traders, and consumers. It also aims to empower small-scale coffee farmers to tap into the Fair Trade coffee market. Currently, 63 primary cooperatives, with a total of 52,442 farmers (46,143 male and 6,299 female), are Fair Trade certified and sell their coffee under Fair Trade terms. Forty-three of these cooperatives hold both Fair Trade and Organic certifications, including those contributing to this particular coffee blend.
