The Science Behind Decaffeinated Coffee
Not feeling the buzz over fully-caffeinated speciality coffees? Decaf coffees have a huge number of benefits, but have never had the platform to thrive in the UK coffee consumption scene, we’re here to fix that. We’re starting with helping coffee drinkers to realise how similar caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees actually are.
Just like regular coffee, decafs come from a green and untreated product of a coffee plant. These green beans are harvested from the cherry that grows on the plant when they are ripe. Speciality coffee beans can then be soaked in water for a period of time, or in other liquids that have a similar effect, in order to wash out the caffeine. This process washes out 97% of the caffeine so that the drinker can enjoy at any time of day!
The process washes away the caffeination, but it certainly doesn’t wash away the incredible flavours that the beans possess. Just like fully-caffeinated coffee, decafs can be enjoyed as a part of a healthy diet.

Why Has Decaf not hit the big stage yet?
Organic Coffees: the Conscious Choice
Due to the colossal demand on coffee farmers, the production methods are adapted to be cheaper and easier, but with negative impacts elsewhere.
There are a number of reasons that decaf speciality coffees are still playing catch-up to it’s fully-caffeinated counterpart. We’d love to hear from you if you felt any other reasons that we might have missed off!
1. Perceived Taste Differences – Decaf coffee often undergoes a process to remove caffeine, which can alter its taste and aroma compared to regular coffee. Some people find decaf coffee lacking in flavor or depth compared to caffeinated coffee.
2. Caffeine’s Functionality – Many coffee drinkers enjoy the stimulating effects of caffeine and drink coffee primarily for its energizing properties. Decaf coffee doesn’t offer the same pick-me-up, so those who rely on coffee to kickstart their day or stay alert may prefer caffeinated options.
3. Health Benefits – Some people drink coffee not just for its taste or caffeine content but also for its potential health benefits, such as increased alertness and improved cognitive function. While decaf coffee still contains antioxidants and other beneficial compounds found in regular coffee, the absence of caffeine may lead some to believe it’s not as effective.
4. Limited Options – Decaf coffee may not always be readily available in the same variety and quality as caffeinated coffee.
5. Culture and Norms – Caffeinated coffee has historically been the norm in many cultures, making decaf less ingrained in social rituals and traditions surrounding coffee consumption.
